New Autism Class approved for Scoil Mhuire

New ASD class for Scoil Mhuire Creeslough.

The school community of Scoil Mhuire is delighted with the recent announcement from the National Council for Special Education that a new class for children with Autism will open at the school in September 2023.

This is very positive and welcome news for our school and for our community. A large number of people worked hard to secure this class for our school. We thank everyone who supported this campaign and we are particularly pleased for the pupils and families who will benefit from this in the years ahead. It is very significant that children with autism can now access an education, appropriate to their needs, in their local environment, surrounded by their siblings and peers. We thank our local SENO who has been most supportive of our endeavours.

The pupils in this class will benefit from a very favourable pupil teacher ratio and will have access to various supports to help meet their needs. Inclusion is at the heart of this with pupils getting specialised support alongside regular opportunities to integrate and participate in learning experiences, appropriate to their needs, in a mainstream setting. The focus is always on the needs of the pupils with ASD and how they can be supported to achieve their full potential.

We are excited about the opening of this new class and we will continue to plan for this in the months ahead. We are looking forward to welcoming our new pupils to the school. If you would like any further information, please contact the school office.
